Local Artists Drop Off Panels at Library Connection

Artists who choose to deliver their panels early may do so in one of two ways before the final deadline: June 16th at the Gas Station.

You may arrange with me to leave your panels at my home or you may deliver them to the Library Connection in Adams Square.  You may want to prepare your own receipt to have the librarian sign to confirm that you've left your panel with them.  If you opt to leave your panel at the Library Connection, please let me know and I'll pick it up there.  Be sure the Library is open before heading down to leave your artwork.
See below for hours and address.

Moving Right Along

Update May 28, 2012

Distant artists are encouraged to get their panels to me as soon as possible.  Please include instructions for the assembly and I'll do my best to do it exactly the way you envision it. Pieces sent rolled up in mailing tubes seem to be a good idea for economy. It takes about a day to flatten the pieces.
Installation of the project will be June 28, 2012 at the Gas Station.  Final Deadline for all pieces is June 16th.  Getting them before that date will really help.  Keep in mind that the idea is about the word as an object.  Deal with it any way you like, just make sure it's legible from fifteen feet away.

Thanks to Ripsime Marashian of the Glendale Arts and Culture Department for facilitating this project.  The A and C Department is now under the aegis of the Glendale Library System, Cindy Cleary Head Librarian.  Cindy has been an arts advocate for many years in Glendale and it's our hope that use of the Gas Station and other civic spaces may continue to open to installations like this one.

May 21, 2012 New Information

Local artists stopped by the Gas Station in Adams Hill today and with the exception of a few who may have not gotten the invitation, the project is well underway.  If you are a local artist and have not received your panel, please let me know right away so that we might coordinate you and your panel.  Two artists have already responded to the email I sent earlier this afternoon.

If anyone has become too busy or wants to opt out for any reason, it's perfectly okay.  We have a waiting list of artists who will be happy to participate.  No harm. No foul.

EVERYONE:
I'd like to receive your panel as soon as possible.
My original idea was to have the panels all delivered to the Gas Station in the middle of June.  That final deadline (Saturday, June 16th)  will stay in place, but it would be so helpful to have as many as possible as early as possible so I don't have to rush the assembly process.

Thank you to all the artists whom I met today.  The energy and good will are flowing like anything!

Stay tuned.  Thanks, michael

REVISED JULY 4TH PROJECT GUIDELINES

Guidelines for Contributing Artists: July Fourth Project @ The Gas Station in Adams Square Mini-Park:
                           Palmer and Adams
                             1020 E. Palmer Glendale 91205

UPDATE May 15, 2012     It may be helpful to know the position of your Word for this project.

Thanks to calligrapher Deirdre Anderson for asking about position.   There are four individual sides: A, B, C and D of fifteen panels each.  The Code determines where your word will go.  By using your Letter and number, you can determine the position of your word.

If you have not received your code letter and number, let me know.  By making a scale model grid of fifteen panels 1.5" high by 2" across and labeling them as below using this pattern you'll see where your word will appear:

                   C1          C2          C3
                 C4          C5          C6
                 C7          C8          C9
                 C10        C11        C12
                 C13        C14        C15

Questions and suggestions are welcome.  Please RSVP for the panel pick up on Sunday 5/20/12... but I'll be in the park from 11 AM until 2PM anyway, so just come on by Palmer and Adams 91205.    If you are unable to pick up your panel on Sunday, let me know and we'll find a way to get it to you soon.

Finished panels are due no later than June 16th at the Gas Station.  However, I'll be happy to receive them sooner.

Thanks so much for your participation! Keep checking here for updates.

UPDATE 5/14/12   We have reached a full compliment of artists.  If you would like to be on the waiting list, please send an email to: directortv41 at Yahoo.  This is developing to be a very interesting installation. Thanks to all who have signed up

5/12/12 UPDATE:  Michael Sheehan will be at the Gas Station in Adams Square Mini-Park from 11AM until 2PM on Sunday, May 20, 2012 to distribute panels to confirmed participants and collect those which may be completed.   Palmer and Adams, Glendale 91205  There are still a few words left. See below for contact information. For Confirmed Artists, in email please refer to your Code Number and your word to help me reference your emails.  I'm trying to compile a special list to email Participants updates, so if you could send an email with your code and word again, that will be a big help. Thanks.

Below is what one row of panels will look like. There will be three 'curtains' to each side of the space.  Words will read from left to right.

*********************

Words of American Patriots (An Historical Event!) will comprise sixty different artworks/words, using supplied 18 x 24 inch cardboard panels.  Each contributor will create only one word for the exhibit.

“Distant” artists may use butcher paper or other materials to create their contribution to facilitate mailing to and from Glendale, CA.

Participants shall provide their own materials for application to each panel.

Artists contributing to this project may use any creative process to create one word (or in a few cases two words) on one cardboard panel.

Participants may use traditional and non-traditional materials including but not limited to: stencils, fabric, photographs, construction paper, non-toxic glues, markers, pens and paints, craft supplies and found objects.

Materials restricted from use include items that may cause injury or due to weight, size or material would not be suitable for application to the card-board matrix including but not limited to:
very sharp-edged materials,
toxic materials,
living organisms,
illegal materials.
Items valued at more than $5.00, or any thing at risk of theft, should not be used.
Please keep the weight of each piece to 16 ounces or less.

Upon collection, the pieces/words will be organized in ‘curtains’ consisting of four curtains of fifteen 18” x 24”  connected panels, three across by five down and hung from battens in the Gas Station at Palmer and Adams in Glendale.

Please maintain the “Landscape” orientation of the panel and create only the word or words that appear on the back of the panel. Some participants have already been assigned a word. Some will receive their word when they pick up a panel. (Location to be announced soon.)

Letters/Words should be at least 8 to 10 inches in height and must be readable from fifteen feet distance.  Larger letters are preferred over smaller ones. Filling the entire space is a goal. Holes will be drilled two inches from the top and bottom and in four inches from the sides.

Limited to Sixty participants.  There is no fee to participate.
All Are Welcome.

The Gas Station Gallery will not be monitored

Matrices for local participants will be made available by the end of May.  Finished art will be collected at the Gas Station: Palmer and Adams, Glendale, CA 91205 on June 16, 2012.

Please direct questions to Michael Sheehan at: directortv41at yahoo.com to be assigned a word and make arrangements to participate.   Please note that my email address must be 'adjusted' to work.
